Just (may)Be* has been created by us, a husband and wife team from Sydney, who are actively looking for inspirations, ideas and other means to support ourselves while we aim to continue to provide support and a loving home environment for our adult son who is on the autism spectrum. Supporting our son has not been without a challenge but any seeming difficulties only help us to persevere with the right attitude and see life in better perspective.
A growing number of parents like us are finding that there's a huge gap in the system as far as finding the right support for adult individuals on the spectrum is concerned. It is often a case of going around in circles while many of these individuals have been unable to attend regular mainstream programs. As every case is unique, an individualized support program is not only necessary but is of paramount importance.
Kids and adults on the autism spectrum are often stereotyped. It's one thing to place them in a category but to know exactly how to behave around them is another. In our society, awareness of the condition is increasing. However, there are still many of us who are unfamiliar with their needs and don't necessarily know how to best interact with them.
As a caring society, is there something we already know deep in our hearts?
It takes courage for someone to go outside their comfort zone and make every effort to forge a spiritual connection with an individual who has a disability and carries a certain "label". People who have the ability to see past the "label" with an open heart & mind, as we know, are quite rare. But when we go deeper to forge a spiritual connection, releasing any preconceived mental concepts, which we might have about any human being, we will be amazed by how much we can learn, not just about the others but also about ourselves. Thus, life becomes meaningful and rewarding. And when we become deeply connected, we delight ourselves in discovering something new about what we all are as human beings and what we are truly capable of.
Through inspiration and careful observation, we have created innovative programs for these individuals especially those who are unable to attend the mainstream programs.
